Public opposition against nuisances from the exploitation

Disturbances include (1) effects on landscape and land occupation (for instance construction of roads and of the geothermal plant, drill pad and other infrastructures on site and deviation of rivers), (2) visual alteration (with steam plum, drill pads, etc.), (3) disturbances associated with increased road traffic and dust production, from noise and vibration generated by engines and pumps associated to the wells and plants activities, and in some geological contexts smell caused by hydrogen sulphide (H2S), which is naturally present in geothermal gases, in the surroundings of the geothermal sites.

Informations

  • Category: Risks due to uncertainties in the external context
  • Id: B-4
  • Phases:
    • Drilling / Testing
    • Exploitation / Development
  • Consequences:
    • Economic / Performance / Acceptability

Mitigation

  • Prevention:
    • Dialogue with representative of public, of state and/or of region early in and throughout the project life
    • Early engagement to expose best practices and mitigation measure for nuisances
  • Corrective measures:
    • Information campaigns for the public - construction site visits
    • Limit nuisances (e.g. put noise reduction pannels, work during daytime, limit truck rotations, use of electric machines when possible)

The colors represent a computation of typical percentage of answers expected for each cell in the risk matrix. The numbers in each cell represent the actual answers from the risk survey.
