Target formation has no/insufficient fluid for commercial production

During exploration drilling, the targeted formation might present insufficient or no fluid leading to limited production and injection rate and in the end poor financial viability of a project. Geophysical and other explorations methods can be implemented to comprehend, before engaging in exploration drilling, if fluids might be present and evaluate the potential volumes in place.

Informations

  • Category: Risks due to subsurface uncertainties
  • Id: D-10
  • Phases:
    • Drilling / Testing
  • Consequences:
    • Economic / Performance / Acceptability

Mitigation

  • Prevention:
    • Accurate collection an interpretation of expected geology  for securing information on the target reservoir
  • Monitoring:
    • Thorough geological survey/core sample analysis
    • Doing new surface  geophysical measurements for the better understanding of  expected geology for securing information on the target reservoir
  • Corrective measures:
    • Find suitable water bearing formation in the already drilled section
    • Use well to explore other reservoirs and acquire additional geological and hydrogeological data
    • Convert to closed loop system
