Particle production ("sanding")

During development, testing and exploitation of a well, sand particle may be produced in clastic environment with little cohesion. Sand production might cause damages to the injection wells and create rapid clogging of a well leading to injectivity reducing. The appearance of sand can be caused notably by poor cohesion of the formation, by incomplete development of the well, brutal start and stop of production or inappropriate completion design.

Informations

  • Category: Risks due to subsurface uncertainties
  • Id: D-14
  • Phases:
    • Exploitation / Development
  • Consequences:
    • Economic / Performance / Acceptability

Mitigation

  • Prevention:
    • Apply best practices for completion design, adapted to formation and for development of well
    • Maintenance of injection well
    • Regular cleaning of well
    • Stop and start production with care and avoid water hammer
    • Adapted filtration at surface
  • Monitoring:
    • Pressure monitoring and cleaning of surface filters
  • Corrective measures:
    • Filtration unit at surface
    • Clean well ( air-lift, back-washing)
