Degradation of the reservoir (structure, properties, deteriorating whole-scale further commercial utilization)

During development, testing and exploitation of the wells, damages to the reservoir (close from the well or deeper in the reservoir) caused by mechanical, thermal or chemical mechanisms can put at risk the integrity of the formation and the wells. Damages of the reservoir can appear notably due to the quality of injected fluid, corrosion and plugging in the well, appearance of scaling, sand, bacterias and other's particles. The damages can appear after high production or injection pressure, or rapid and sudden pressure changes (start and stop of pumps, without inverters).

Informations

  • Category: Risks due to subsurface uncertainties
  • Id: D-17
  • Phases:
    • Exploitation / Development
  • Consequences:
    • Economic / Performance / Acceptability

Mitigation

  • Prevention:
    • Proper reservoir management plan
  • Monitoring:
    • Pressure and flow rate monitoring
  • Corrective measures:
    • Decrease of production rate (temporary)
    • Stimulation (thermal, chemical or hydraulic)
    • Reinterpretation of reservoir model
    • Drill additional reinjection or production well
    • Conversion of the well or abandonment
